Best Face Wash For Acne Prone Skin

Here are my top picks for the best face wash for acne prone skin.

Face wash is one of the most important steps in a skincare routine because it happens on average twice a day for most people. You need to get the right type of face wash for your skin type. It does matter and I’ll explain why below.

Different types of face wash and face cleansers

Before I get specific, let’s look at the different formulas of face wash and cleansers available:

Gel face wash

Gel cleansers have a gel-like formula. They are clear and then to have very gentle, low lather formulas. These are designed for deep cleansing and suit acne-prone and oily skin. Gel cleansers help with unclogging pores and removing excess sebum (oil) and other impurities on the skin.

Foam face cleansers

Foam face cleansers can either be gel or cream in consistency. When mixed with water, foam cleansers produce a luxurious foamy lather. They are designed to deep clean the skin and are slightly more powerful than gel or cream cleansers because the foam is a form of gentle exfoliation. So, after using a foam cleanser, you might feel a slight tugging feeling on the skin. Foam cleansers are better suited for normal to combination skin types.

Cream cleanser

Cream face cleansers are white and creamy like a whipped moussed in texture designed to hydrate the skin. When mixed with water, a cream cleanser will produce a rich creamy lather. Most cream cleansers are gentle like gel cleansers, but may have a few ingredients such as mineral oils, which can be sensitizing or cause breakouts.

Why gel cleansers and face wash are best suited for acne-prone skin?

From the three formulas mentioned above, gel cleansers seem to work the best for acne-prone skin types because they are extra, extra gentle. They may not lather up like a foam or cream cleanser, but it’s not a bad thing. It doesn’t mean they aren’t working. Gel cleansers can also be used over active breakouts and fresh pimple scars and that’s important for acne prone skin. No matter what state the skin is in, it has to be properly cleansed day and night to fight off further breakouts.

What ingredients to look for in face wash for acne prone skin?

Water should be one of the first ingredients to look for. Glycerin for hydration. Green tea (camellia), aloe leaf juice, cucumber, oat extract for soothing properties. Plant oils such as sunflower seed and soybean for skin barrier protection
