Pregnancy Nighttime Skincare Routine For Oily, Acne Prone Skin

My nighttime skincare routine is now officially classified as “me-time”. It takes a little bit longer than my daytime routine and I love it. I am also extra diligent about it because I do wear some makeup every day and with acne prone skin it is really important to clean the skin and unclog pores at the end of each day.

I will also preface this post by saying that there are lots of opinions on skincare and which products are pregnancy-safe — I am sharing my routine in an effort to help and share experiences. Please do your own research and consult a doctor before using new products, especially if you are pregnant.

Note: I have normal to oily, acne-prone skin but while pregnant it is slightly drier than usual.

First cleanse

Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 5.24.44 pmI’ve been using the Tatcha Camellia Oil Cleanser as my first oil-based cleanse every night to remove any and all makeup. I really like this product because I can take the cleanser directly into my palms and massage it onto my face without having to use a cotton round. After a few minutes of gently massaging it into my skin, I add warm water so it emulsifies and works further to remove any makeup and dirt. My skin feels soft and hydrated after using the cleanser — not oily or “clogged” at all.

Second cleanse

soy face 150-mlSince I am using an oil cleanser as my first cleanse, I always follow it up with a face cleanser to remove any no oil cleanser and makeup or dirt that might get left behind. I recently learned that double cleansing like this is one of the secrets for helping acne-prone skin stay clear and preventing further breakouts so I am very diligent about it. I have been a long-time user and fan of the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser. It’s extremely gentle and hydrating on the skin so it never feels stripped or dry after use.

Essence

The first layer is an essence, which is essentially a very thin serum-like product that helps to lock-in moisture and protection to skin. It also helps any serums and moisturisers applied after to absorb into the skin. I use the Fresh Black Tea Kombucha Essence Treatment. FYI This is also the step where you can use a toner if you prefer or already use one.

Serum

My skin always feels soft and supple after applying this serum.

Rich Moisturiser / Sleeping Mask

And the final step is to lock in all the good skincare I’ve done with a thicker moisturising cream or sleeping mask. I really like the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask. It’s essentially a very thick cream that is also an overnight sleeping mask that you don’t need to wash off. The formula is thick and hydrating, making it ideal for my drier skin in pregnancy especially during the night in an air-conditioned room when my skin is stripped of some moisture. In the mornings my skin feels soft and hydrated and I think using an extra hydrating product like this at night is key.

I keep my nighttime routine pretty simple (even though it includes 5 steps!) and try to do it every night because I need to nourish my skin. Especially while pregnant because it is extra dry. I also noticed that when I have acne breakouts due to hormones or excessive eating of chocolates (I am pregnant with major cravings!) are healing faster too.
