Pregnancy Daytime Skincare Routine For Oily, Acne-Prone Skin

Skincare is a really important part of my daily routine. It’s become a ritual — I can’t start or end my day without ensuring it’s done. I keep my pregnancy daytime routine pretty simple so it’s something I will be more likely to stick to.

I will also preface this post by saying that there are lots of opinions on skincare and which products are pregnancy-safe — I am sharing my routine in an effort to help and share experiences. Please do your own research and consult a doctor before using new products, especially if you are pregnant.

Note: I have normal to oily, acne-prone skin but while pregnant it is a slightly drier than usual.

Cleanse

soy face 150-mlI always like to cleanse my face in the morning. Living in a hot and humid climate means my skin gets a little greasy overnight and I like using the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser to cleanse and refresh my skin. The formula is very light and leaves my skin feeling soft, supple and clean. I also like this face cleanser because it doesn’t leave my skin feeling stripped or dry after use, which is important to be while pregnant because my skin is drier than usual.

Toner / Essence / Serum

Using a Vitamin C serum is a new step I recently added to my daytime skincare routine. I tested the Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum for a month and discovered it is really helping with brightening my skin and helping reduce the appearance of acne scars. I take about two pumps and spread it in my palms and then press it onto my skin; I find this method works a lot better than rubbing or massaging because the formula of the product is quite tacky so it tends to “stick” to wherever it is applied for a few seconds before it absorbs into the skin. With my skin being extra dry at the moment, I like the tacky nature of the product because I feel it hydrates my skin well too.

Moisturiser

neutrogena creamI’ve been using the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream moisturiser for over a year now and I really like it for several reasons. First, it’s affordable and easily available at most supermarkets and drugstores. Second, it’s designed for extra dry skin, which is exactly what I need right now. Third, the formula is also fragrance-free and suitable for acne-prone skin — it isn’t too thick and doesn’t clog my pores.

Sunscreen

Regardless of whether I am staying home or going out, I apply sunscreen as the final step of routine daily. Especially since I am also using a vitamin C serum daily, which makes the skin extra sensitive to the sun. But again, sunscreen is essential to protect against UVA and UVB rays and prevents ageing of the skin around the face. One thing to be careful when using sunscreen while pregnant (and breastfeeding) is to look for a mineral (also known as physical) sunscreen because these are safer for you and baby during these stages. Look for ingredients such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide on the label as these are considered safe. I am currently using SUPERGOOP! 100% Mineral Matte Screen Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40 and I really like it. It wears well in humid weather and under makeup and doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy at all.

I keep my morning routine short and simple to ensure I stick to it. With acne-prone skin I think it’s vital to keep it clean and moisturised.
