The Best Dry Shampoos For Dark Hair

My life functions on coffee and dry shampoo. I have dark hair, so I need a dry shampoo that is going to work on my brown locks. That means no white cast or leaving my hair feeling weird and crunchy. I’ve tried a whole bunch and these dry shampoos for dark hair *work*.

Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk

150 ml. Price: USD $20

When it comes to dry shampoos, the Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk is a holy grail of mine. It does the best job of soaking up excess oiliness and giving hair a clean and healthy look. Not to mention the extra volume it adds at the roots. What I love about the Klorane Dry Shampoo is that my hair smells great and looks soft and fresh all day (we’re talking 8 hours or more) — it doesn’t get clumpy or strange like with other dry shampoos (cough Batiste cough). When I spray the dry shampoo it does leave a white cast on the roots, but after about a minute it absorbs right in and then there’s no cast at all. It is a little more expensive, but it’s money well spent!

Boots Brunette Dry Shampoo

200 ml. Price: USD $7

The Boots Brunette Dry Shampoo is my back up dry shampoo when I don’t have the Klorane on hand. I like that it leaves no white cast and works pretty well to give my hair the refresh it needs when I have a real time crunch. It lasts about 5-6 hours before the hair starts looking oily again, but that doesn’t really surprise me given the difference in price point compared to Klorane. No other tinted dry shampoo has performed as well as the Boots Brunette Dry Shampoo for dark hair.

Tips on how to use dry shampoo for dark hair

  • Part hair and focus the spray on the roots in smaller sections (avoid the lengths of the hair)
  • Spray about 20-30cm from roots
  • Let the dry shampoo sit (even if you see the white cast) for about 1-2 minutes
  • Massage the dry shampoo into the roots with fingers
  • Brush your hair out properly (and keep brushing throughout the day if it starts clumping)
  • Shampoo your hair to clear out the dry shampoo at the end of the day because it is a heavier product and will sit on your scalp and may clog pores
