Two Quick Ways To Determine Your Skin Type

Knowing your skin type is the first and most important step towards building a skincare routine that will work for you.

Here are the four main skin types

The four main types of skin are dry, oily, combination and normal and here are the main characteristics of each type: Your skin type is essentially a description of how your skin looks and feel every day.

skin type chart, what's your skin type

Figure out your skin type with The Bare Face Method

Cleanse your face with a gentle face cleanser or face wash and then leave it for 20-30 minutes. Do not apply any serums, toners, creams or moisturizers. After 20-30 minutes, observe how your skin looks and feels on the t-zone, cheeks, chin and forehead. Refer to the chart above.

If your skin feels tight and dry all over with no oiliness, then it’s most likely dry skin

If your skin appears slightly shiny on the t-zone but not the cheeks, then it’s probably normal skin

If your skin appears quite shiny / slick on the t-zone but not the cheeks, then it’s probably combination skin

If your skin looks and feels quite oily on the t-zone and cheeks, then it’s oily skin.

Use The Blotting Method to find your skin type

Pat a blotting sheet on different areas of the face (forehead and nose (aka t-zone) and cheeks) and observe how much oil is visible on the sheet from each part.

If little to no oil is visible from the whole face, then it’s dry skin

If a little oil is visible from the forehead and nose, but not the cheeks, then it is normal skin

If a moderate amount of oil is visible from the forehead and nose, but not the cheeks, then it is most likely combination skin

If a lot of oil is visible from the t-zone, cheeks and chin, then it is oily skin

Once you know your skin type and concern (acne, hyperpigmentation, dehydration, fine lines, aging, sensitivity etc), then figuring out the right skincare products is so much easier.
