Sun protection is everything — remember these tips

Protecting the skin against the sun in important all year round, but it’s even more important in the summer when you will outside and exposed to direct sunlight for longer periods of time. Remember these important tips:

  • SPF factor matters: your sunscreen should be a minimum SPF of 30, but ideally use a sunscreen with SPF of 50 and higher when exposed to the sun
  • Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before exposure to the sun to ensure maximum protection
  • Use sunscreen all over the body
  • Reapply sunscreen every two to three hours when outside or in the water. If you are wearing makeup, then use a sun stick or sunscreen powder to reapply sunscreen on the face without disturbing the makeup.

Wash your face with a double cleanse

This skincare tip for summer may seem so obvious, but it bears repeating because the skin is exposed to so much more in the summertime. Not to mention all layers of sunscreen mixed with sweat collecting in the pores. So, it is vital to do a double cleanse (cleanse with an oil or balm first, followed up with a face wash) every night to clean the skin well.

Be careful with skincare active ingredients such as retinol, AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C in the summer

Skincare active ingredients such as retinol, AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C make the skin sensitive, especially when exposed to the sun. In the summer, you might be out in the sun for much longer periods of time, so be careful about how often and when you are using active skincare. A good rule to follow for the summer is to use all skincare actives (except vitamin C) at night and reduce usage to alternate nights.

When I travel in the summer or go to the beach, I stop using all my active skincare for that period of time because I know I’ll be out in the sun a lot more and don’t want to irritate my skin. Instead, I focus more on hydrating and protecting the skin when traveling. So, my skincare routine simplifies to face wash, moisturizer, and SPF in the AM and double cleanse, hydrating serum, and moisturizer in the PM.

Skincare tips for summer to protect the body

Protecting the body is just as important as the face. Remember these tips:

  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated and avoid dehydration and feeling unwell in the extreme heat. It also helps the skin glow and look plump
  • Wear a hat or vizor when in direct sunlight

Have a wonderful and safe summer!
