Skincare For Kids And Babies: A Simple Guide

Here’s a simple guide on skincare for kids and babies. Developing good habits now can lead to less skin issues in the future đŸ™‚

Do young kids really need a skincare routine?

Yes. But, it doesn’t have to be complicated at all. For young children it’s about setting up good habits through a simple daily skincare routine. The idea is that kids become aware and understand why taking care of the skin is so important with the hope that it becomes second nature as they grow up.

Simple skincare routine for kids

Young kids don’t need much in terms of skincare. The skin needs to be clean, moisturized and protected against the sun.

So, here’s a very simple morning and evening routine, which they can even do by themselves as they mature đŸ™‚

Morning:

  • Body wash and shampoo
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen (**only apply sunscreen on babies aged 6 months and up**)

Night:

  • Body wash and shampoo
  • Moisturizer

This simple routine doesn’t have to change until the teen years when other skincare issues such as acne may pop up.

What to look for in skincare products for babies and kids

By virtue of the category, most products for babies and kids are formulated to be extremely gentle, and you can’t go wrong by sticking to known and familiar brands like Aveeno, CeraVe, Cetaphil, Johnsons Baby etc.

Look for the following information on product packaging:

  • Tear-free: Make sure the product says “tear-free” because some do not mention it and stinging can occur
  • Fragrance-free: For newborns and babies, opt for fragrance-free simply because their skin is so gentle
  • Dermatologist-tested
  • Made without: parabens, phthalates, dyes, synthetic fragrances, SLS/SLES

Remember: babies under 6 months should NOT wear sunscreen

This is an important point to remember: babies under 6 months should not wear sunscreen. This is because newborn skin is extremely gentle and will be sensitive to the ingredients in sunscreen; it cannot process it as effectively as old children and adults, so it may develop a reaction or rash. Newborn babies should be kept out of direct sunlight exposure at all times. The safest way to protect a baby under 6 months is through clothing and shade. That is why sunscreen is only to be applied once baby is at least 6 months old.

Once your baby is ready for sunscreen, opt for a mineral sunscreen because these are much more gentle on the skin.
