How To Get Clear Skin (For Free!)

Raise your hand, you have Google searched some version of the following statement: “how to get clear skin”. Same, my friend, same. I’m here to tell you after years and years of trial, error and *some* agony that the solution to achieving clear and glowy skin is quite simple and doesn’t cost a penny.

Sleep 8 Hours Or More

The skin much like the body needs regular rest. Imagine how you feel after only 4-5 hours of sleep and compare that with a night of more than 8 hours of glorious slumber. That is exactly how skin reacts to how much (or little) sleep aka rest it gets.

Getting more than 8 hours of sleep a night helps the skin look clear and bright for a few different reasons:

  • There is fluid in the layers underneath the skin’s surface, which fills up while you sleep and this makes the skin look plumper and reduces the appearance of fine lines in the morning.
  • Skin produces collagen once you are asleep and this protein helps to keep the skin’s structure tight and bouncy and also helps to reduce acne and scarring.
  • Reduces stress levels and prevents puffiness and sullen complexion.

Eating Clean (And Drinking Lots Of Water)

Eating lots of vegetables and foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and proteins promote healthy skin cells. Reducing alcohol, processed foods and sugars also prevents acne breakouts and keeps the skin clear.

Drinking water doesn’t necessarily link directly to clear skin, but it does impact overall body and cell performance like flushing toxins from the body, which can impact skin cell function.

Double Cleanse At Night

It’s simple: clean skin = clear skin. Double cleansing means first using a cleansing oil / balm to melt away sunscreen, makeup, debris and any other dirt followed by a face wash (aka face cleanser) to ensure the cleansing oil and any leftover impurities are completely gone. If you don’t cleanse your skin properly, then it can lead to clogged pores, which results in acne breakouts and other issues.

I have acne-prone skin, so believe me when I say I have I have *everything* to figure out how to maintain clear skin and it turns out being consistent with the simple (and free!) tips mentioned above is what has really made a difference. Of course, having a good skincare routine is important too. But skincare products are more effective, if the skin is healthy. It’s really that simple.
