Photo Diary: Luxurious Lazing in Langkawi

Living in Thailand, beach and island holidays are a regular occurrence and I’ll rarely consider other countries and islands as options for a beach holiday. I just got back from a family holiday on the small tropical island of Langkawi, just off the coast of Malaysia and had a wonderful time.

We stayed at The Danna Langkawi, a luxury 5-star resort located on the western side of the island, approximately 20-minutes from Langkawi International Airport. Opening in 2010, the colonial-inspired property is quite new, bright and airy all around. The resort grounds are magnificently and meticulously landscaped with beautiful shrubbery and towering trees. On one side of the resort there are misty hills while the other boasts postcard-like ocean views with fisherman boats set against a colourful sky.

As a group of 6 including a toddler, we booked the two bedroom Empress Beach Villa. The villa is 1080 sqm on the beach front with a spacious living room, 8-seater dining table, kitchenette, a shaded private outdoor space with massage tables for two, one bedroom with a king-size bed and another bedroom with two single beds (extra beds can be requested at a charge, baby cots are free). Each bedroom has a bathroom and there is a half-bathroom in the living room. The most magnificent feature of the villa is the private 163 sqm infinity pool with a view of the ocean. The living room and bedrooms face the pool with doors that open right onto the sun deck, which has sun loungers and plenty of outdoor seating.

The design of the infinity pool itself is beautiful and impressive with sun loungers placed in the the pool, then a spacious jacuzzi section, a shallow section which is ideal for toddlers to swim around around safely and comfortably with a floatation device, and finally a deep end for serious lap swimmers.

I indulged in two Balinese massages in the private outdoor space and really enjoyed my treatments as well as being surrounded by nature and the cool breeze. It made the experience extra relaxing and unique.

Dining at the resort was a real treat with three restaurants and one bar. As a vegetarian family, we found plenty of options and the staff were happy to make adjustments when requested. The breakfast buffet had a nice variety and spread of Western and Asian favourites. Most days we ordered lunch to the villa and for dinners with dined at Terrace and Planter’s, serving Italian and Asian cuisine, respectively. The food overall was fresh and tasty.

For my busy toddler, the large living room and private pool provided enough space for him to run around and be entertained in. He loved the pool and spent hours splashing about in his floatie. The resort also has a Kiddy’s Club, which was a welcome break from the hot sun during the afternoons; it had lots of toys, games and planned activities for kids of all ages. For children under the age of 4, a guardian is required.

It’s safe to say we didn’t leave the villa much and made the most of the private pool and sun deck. Lazing the days away under the sun with cooling dips in the pool and refreshing cocktails and tasty food poolside.

I can’t stress enough how wonderful, warm and caring the staff at The Danna are. Throughout the day they are always willing to help with any small or large request we have. For booking any of the beach villas, you receive the Villa Host service — for any request, an answer is just a phone call away.

The Danna Langkawi
is an ideal luxury getaway for a family or group with kids in tow because there isn’t too much pressure to be out and about discovering the island and the resort itself has something for everyone.
