The Timeless Matte Grey Smoky Eye That Goes With Everything

Master this one and done matte smoky eye and you are all set for those “I have no idea what makeup to do” moments. A classic matte grey smoky eye goes with every kind of outfit.

To create this look, here are the products I used:

  • Dark grey eyeshadow
  • Black kohl pencil
  • Bronzer
  • Nude brown lipstick

Step 1: Use a fluffy brush to add a taupe brown (or use a matte bronzer like I do all the time) in the crease. Feel free to add a bit extra since this is a darker eye look.

Step 2: Use a flat eyeshadow brush and gently tap the dark grey eyeshadow all over the lid and ever so slightly into the crease area. Work in small sections and layer the colour to build intensity and avoid fallout.

Step 3: Use the same fluffy eyeshadow brush with no product on it and blend the dark grey eyeshadow upwards into the crease colour.

Step 4: Use a tapered eyeshadow brush with the dark grey eyeshadow and tap some into the outer corner of the upper lid to add more depth. Use the fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend the crease, if the dark eyeshadow looks patchy.

Step 5: Use a medium smudge brush to apply the matte brown eyeshadow to the lower lash line.

Step 6: Use a black kohl pencil on the upper lids and lower lash line. Use a small smudge brush to smudge out the line, so the eyes look extra smoked out. Apply some dark grey eyeshadow on the lower lash line with the same smudge brush on top of the kohl liner to set it in place. Pile on the mascara.

Step 7: Use an angled contour brush with matte bronzer to contour the face — feel free be extra with the contour because a bronzed/contoured face complements a smoky eye really well. Focus on the cheekbones, temples, and jawline. If you’re feeling extra confident, go on and do that nose contour too!

Step 8: Apply a neutral blush and blend into the bronzer — the blush colour shouldn’t be too bright, otherwise it draws attention away from the eyes, which are the focus of the look.

Step 9: Wear any lipstick you like. My favourite combos with a smoky eye are: nude brown, nude peach or dusty pink.

The technique is what matters here because once you master it, you can adapt the eyeshadow colour to suit your taste and needs. For daytime use a lighter grey / taupe brown shade to keep it light and simple. For nighttime use a dark brown, grey or black to amp it up.
