9 Makeup Tips Nobody Really Talks About

Makeup tips start even before any product is applied to the face 😀

2: Skin prep is the *first* step in any makeup routine

Trust me on this one. If you prep the skin properly before any makeup application, then it will last longer and look flawless. The key is hydration and protection. Long story short: if the skin is hydrated enough, then it doesn’t become oily throughout the day. The oiliness is the skin’s auto-response to a lack of hydration. Also, be sure to wear a sunscreen that pairs well with makeup.

3: Learn how to color correct

The skin on the face has different tones and pigmentations e.g. dark eye circles, greyness around the mouth, sun spots. Applying one concealer and/or foundation won’t result in even skin tone, but knowing how to color correct before applying base products will create a flawless base.

4: Know how to layer different types of formulas

Beauty products are generally available in two formulas: cream/liquid and powder. Always apply cream/liquid products and then apply powder products on top to set the cream/liquid product in place, so it will last longer too.

5: Master a basic bronzer, contour and blush routine

Learning how to contour/bronze and apply blush can really change the way your face looks. A combination of the three will add warmth, radiance, structure and depth.

6: Understand the difference between loose powder and pressed powder

Loose powders are generally transparent, finely milled and designed to set cream/liquid products, so that the pigment of the product below still shows and creates a lightweight, flawless finish.

Pressed powders have more pigmentation and designed to pack more densely onto the brush, so that they give the face a good layer of coverage.

Try this simple test: after applying concealer around the eyes, set one side with a loose powder and the other with a pressed powder and you will see that the side with the pressed powder is more cakey and will crease faster.

I like to think of pressed powder as foundation (especially on the days I don’t wear liquid foundation) and apply it on my cheeks, forehead and nose and jawline for coverage.

Loose powder holds my concealer/foundation in place. If I wear a liquid foundation, then I will set it with translucent setting powder.

7: Let concealer dry down before blending with fingers

I have to admit this makeup hack actually changed my makeup game. Letting concealer dry down for 1 minute before blending means that I have to use less product and get better coverage. The warmth of my fingers creates a seamless and quick blend, especially around the eyes.

8: Always fill in your eyebrows

Eyebrows frame the whole face, so always remember to fill them in. Filled in brows automatically make the face look more put together and more youthful. Even on no makeup days, just fill in your brows and see what a difference it can make.

9: Choose makeup looks with color theory in mind

Sometimes makeup can look “off” because the tones of the products don’t work with your skin tone or it is clashing with your outfit. Give your makeup a little thought and see how how it can elevate your whole look. Read this post: Tips On How To Match Makeup With Your Outfit
